How Long Do Skincare Products Last?

How Long Do Skincare Products Last?

When to Keep, When to Toss: Understanding Expiration in Your Skincare Routine

We all check the use-by dates on milk or yoghurts without a second thought. But when did you last check the expiry date on your moisturiser or face mask? If your bathroom cabinet is home to a few forgotten favourites, it might be time for a clear-out.

Do Skincare Products Expire?

In short—yes, they do. Just like food or medicine, skincare products have a shelf life. The expiry date depends on the formula, packaging, and how you store them. While there’s no universal system, most products will have a Period After Opening (PAO) symbol on the packaging—usually a small jar icon with something like “12M” or “6M”, indicating how many months the product remains good after you’ve opened it.

That said, how you store your skincare has just as much impact as the product’s expiry label. Heat, light and air can all speed up spoilage—more on that below.

The Typical Shelf Life of Common Skincare Products

Here’s a rough guide to how long your products tend to last once opened—assuming they're stored properly.

Moisturisers

A sealed moisturiser can last up to 30 months. Once opened, aim to use it within 12 months. If it starts to separate, feels watery, or smells off, it's time to let it go.

Serums, Retinoids & Active Treatments

If they’re in an air-tight pump or tube, most serums and actives (like retinol or vitamin C) can last around a year. Products in jars may spoil sooner, often within 6 months, as they’re more exposed to air and bacteria each time you dip in.

Face Masks

Clay or natural-based masks will generally dry out more quickly—typically lasting about 6 to 12 months after opening. Gel or cream masks (especially in sealed tubes) often last a bit longer—up to two or three years unopened.

🧴 Tip: Natural or preservative-free products tend to have shorter shelf lives, so make sure to check those labels.

How to Tell If Your Skincare Has Gone Off

Yes, we know—binning half-full skincare can feel wasteful. But using an expired product can irritate your skin or lead to breakouts.

Here’s when to say goodbye:

  • The texture has changed (watery, gritty, or curdled)
  • The colour is different from when you bought it
  • It smells strange or off
  • It’s separated into layers
  • It causes irritation, even though it didn’t before

When in doubt, don’t risk it—especially on sensitive areas like your face or eyes.

How to Make Your Skincare Last Longer

Want to get the most out of your beauty stash? These simple habits can help extend your products’ shelf life:

  • Store smart: Keep products in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight—your bathroom window ledge is not ideal.
  • Minimise exposure: Always close lids tightly and try not to leave jars open for long.
  • Keep it clean: Avoid touching products directly with your fingers—use a spatula or choose pumps and tubes when you can.
  • Don’t share: Yes, even with your best mate. Sharing creams and serums spreads bacteria.
  • Do a regular check-in: Every few months, scan your skincare stash for expired dates or signs of change.
